Bigger Brains Equal Smarter Brains?

by Steve Daitch on April 15th, 2009

Well, not quite. In fact, if it were true, as a general rule men would be smarter than women since men’s brains typically outweigh those of women. The truth of the brain matter is that the size of a person’s brain has more to do with their body size, and little, if nothing, to do with intelligence.

Size Doesn’t Matter

To date, studies on the relationship between brain size and intelligence have yet to reveal any evidence of a relationship at all. If there was, imagine how much larger an elephant’s brain is compared to a human’s? Common as it may be for people to apply the body/brain weight ratio as a measure, intelligence comes down to other aspects of the brain. In other words, what matters more is not who has more matter.
