Short-Term Memory (STM)
Also referred to as "primary memory" and "active memory,” STM refers to one’s capacity to absorb small amounts of information and recall it over a short period of time. Short-term memory is believed to be limited to seconds, while its capacity varies from 3-4 elements (words, numbers, letters) to as many as nine. Long-term memory (LTM), in contrast, stores an apparently unlimited amount of information indefinitely.
