By now we’ve all heard that the omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish are healthy for your brain. Now it turns out these fish may also hold other elements benefitting the brain health, specifically Vitamin D.

 

Food For Thought: Think Fish

 

According to a new study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, higher levels of vitamin D are associated with enhanced cognitive function, particularly in middle-aged and older men.

 

The study, conducted at eight test centers across Europe, compared the cognitive performances of over 3,000 men between the ages of 40 and 79. The results indicate that those men with higher vitamin D levels performed considerably better in a neuropsychological exam that assesses a person’s attention and speed at which they process information.

 

According to Dr. David Lee of Manchester’s School of Translational Medicine, and one of the researchers behind the study, “Previous studies exploring the relationship between vitamin D and cognitive performance in adults have produced inconsistent findings but we observed a significant, independent association between a slower information processing speed and lower levels of vitamin D.”
